It’s summer time, and you know what that means in California: the best seasonal produce, especially at Farmers Markets!

That first bite into a ripe peach, the juice dripping all the way down your chin. A classic slice of watermelon that’s the perfect shade of red. Strawberries so sweet you are forced to stop yourself from eating the whole basket yourself. A bowl of heirloom tomatoes, all different colors and shapes and sizes.

Discover which of your favorite foods and vegetables are in season.

Summer is the best time for fruits and vegetables, and there’s no better place to buy them than at Farmers Markets or through Community Supported Agriculture (CSAs), which delivers produce directly from a farm to its subscribers on a weekly basis. They don’t just have some of the best produce around; supporting local farms is also better for the environment and your community.

For starters, you’re buying local. That means trucks or other gas-guzzling vehicles aren’t shipping your food from hundreds or even thousands of miles away from other parts of the state, country, and world.

Small- and mid-size farmers who bring great food to your community can make a bigger profit at farmers markets and through CSAs than at supermarkets, enabling them to focus on sustainable farming instead of just cost. A 2015 study showed that 3/4 of farmers at Farmers Markets use organic practices that can help combat climate change.

At Farmers Markets or inside your weekly CSA box, you’re going to find fresh seasonal produce that is healthier, tastes better, is better for the environment, and invests dollars back into your community.

You can find a CSA subscription from one of your local farms here, or check out one of the more than 700 certified Farmers Markets in California. So scroll through the list to find the closest one near you, eat sustainably, and enjoy the fruits of the summer!
