OAKLAND, CA — Today, California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) released the following statement on the Governor’s budget proposal released today, including a proposed reduction to 2022’s $54 billion climate investments, adding to last year’s cuts, to $48 billion.

Statement from Mary Creasman, CEO, California Environmental Voters:

It is our leaders’ job to figure out how we fund the transition to clean energy and resilience now. In this tight economic moment, we hoped for a more courageous proposal including solutions like a robust climate bond and ending corporate handouts. For every “dollar” saved right now, Californians will pay exponentially more in the devastation of communities, livelihoods and lives lost.

Even with revenue shortfalls, our state has the opportunity this year to catalyze global climate action with the implementation of SB 253 and SB 261. These groundbreaking bills include language to advance start-up expenses with a loan from sources like the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund. This is low hanging fruit to continue our progress and protect our future.

We can’t backslide or slow down while the climate crisis speeds up. We need our state leadership to do more, not less. We look forward to working with the Governor and Legislature to make 2024 a year of innovative and courageous climate leadership.”

California Environmental Voters (formerly the California League of Conservation Voters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
