Small fish living in a region of the Pacific Ocean where floating trash collects in a huge, slowly swirling bowl eat as much as 24,000 tons of plastic waste each year, scientists have found.
France Becomes First Country To Ban Fracking
In a major setback for the oil and gas industry, the French Senate last week voted 176 to 151 to ban hydraulic fracturing (a.k.a. fracking), the controversial gas industry drilling method facing scrutiny the world over due to water contamination and other concerns. Once the legislation receives presidential approval, France will be the first country to permanently outlaw fracking.
California has record year for rooftop solar
New data shows that 2010 was a record year for California’s efforts to encourage homeowners and businesses to install rooftop solar panels. Californians installed 194 megawatts of new solar electric generating equipment in 2010 — a 47 percent increase over 2009, according to a report released Tuesday about the California Solar Initiative.

Long term exposure to air pollution could damage the brain and lead to learning and memory problems and even depression, new research has revealed. The tests on mice showed that in the long term dirty air could cause actual physical changes to the brain which in turn had negative effects.
